Eze is a medieval village perched 400 metres above the Mediterranean, halfway between Nice and Monaco. No cars, no traffic — just narrow cobblestone streets and stone buildings that have barely changed in centuries. And everywhere you turn, there's a view.

The village feels private. It also feels dramatic. And it photographs beautifully — whatever happens there looks extraordinary in pictures.

The Chèvre d'Or is the spot I recommend most often for proposals in Eze. The hotel sits at the heart of the village. Its rose gardens look directly over the Mediterranean — Nice to the west, Monaco to the east, the coastline curving below. On a clear day, it's one of the most beautiful views on the entire French Riviera.

The gardens are manicured, intimate, and manageable for a surprise. There's a natural flow to the space that makes the staging feel organic rather than forced. The spot where Jax proposed to Suzanne, with the roses in bloom and the sea behind them, needed nothing added. The setting did everything.

Château Eza — The Terrace with the WOW Reaction

Château Eza has a terrace that looks out over the Mediterranean at one of the highest points of the village. I've photographed proposals there. The reaction I see every time is the same — a genuine, involuntary WOW the moment the couple steps out and takes in the view. Before anything has even been said.

It's more dramatic than the Chèvre d'Or, more exposed, with Monaco glittering below on a clear day. For the right couple, it's extraordinary.

The Jardin Exotique de Eze sits at the very top of the village, with 360-degree views over the coastline. Less intimate than the other two spots, but for couples who want something unusual — botanical, wild, unexpected — it's worth considering.

Suzanne & Jax's Proposal at Château de la Chèvre d'Or

Jax contacted me through an agency. He was planning a surprise from thousands of miles away and needed someone on the ground he could trust. He had a vision. My job was to make it happen without Suzanne having any idea.

The cover story was a couple's photo shoot — a romantic souvenir of their French Riviera holiday. Suzanne arrived at the Chèvre d'Or in an elegant black dress. Jax wore a dark blue suit, white shirt. They looked like they were already dressed for something special, which of course they were — only one of them knew it.

As we moved through the rose gardens, a violinist was already in position, waiting discreetly. Suzanne had no idea. When they reached the spot — roses on all sides, the Mediterranean stretching below — the violinist began to play All of Me by John Legend.

Suzanne's eyes sparkled. She sensed something was shifting. And then Jax went down on one knee.

Her hands went to her mouth. Tears came immediately. She said yes before he had finished the sentence.

He gave her a bouquet of red roses. They opened champagne. We spent the next hour making photographs in those gardens — two people who had just started a new chapter, still a little stunned by it, completely happy.

How I Work — Planning Your Proposal in Eze

Most of my proposal clients find me on Instagram. The first message usually comes from the person planning the surprise — typed quickly, sometimes late at night, always with that mix of excitement and nerves.

We communicate by message rather than calls. WhatsApp, Instagram DM — whatever works. Phone calls are risky when you're trying to keep a secret from someone you live with.

I handle the timing. I arrive at least 30 minutes before you do, every time. I check the light, confirm the space is clear, make sure nothing can go wrong. By the time you arrive, everything is already in place.

I send you a preparation guide. A few pages covering the day — how to brief your partner on what to wear without raising suspicion, how to get to the location naturally, the exact moment I'll signal you to propose. It removes the guesswork and lets you stay focused on the moment itself.

The cover story. The most reliable approach is the couple photo shoot — "I booked us a session as a souvenir of the trip." It works. People dress up for it, they're relaxed, they're happy. And when the proposal happens, the camera is already there.

I've done this enough times to know what makes a proposal feel effortless rather than staged. The secret is preparation — and then complete invisibility in the moment itself.

Practical Tips for Your Proposal in Eze

Plan for late afternoon. The light in Eze in the hour before sunset is extraordinary. The warm glow on the stone buildings, the colours over the sea — it's the window that produces the most beautiful photographs. Time the proposal for this hour if you can.

Eze is entirely pedestrian. No cars in the village. Your partner will walk from the car park at the base — factor this into your timing, and brief them to wear shoes they can walk in on cobblestones. They can change into heels once they arrive.

Book early. Summer dates — particularly June, July, and August — fill quickly. The best spots in the village also get busy with tourists in peak season. Earlier in the day or late afternoon tends to be quieter.

Trust the setting. Eze doesn't need elaborate decoration or complex staging. The village itself is the backdrop. Keep it simple and let the place do what it does.

An engagement shoot in paradise

I had the great pleasure of meeting Bianca and Daniel on the Greek island paradise of Santorini for their engagement shoot . Engagement shoots are usually done a year, six months or one month before your big day and offer a number of benefits as well as being an exceptionally beautiful memento of your engagement.

Why do an engagement shoot?

For Bianca and Daniel, a young Romanian couple who live in Manchester, this engagement shoot was the opportunity to have some beautiful shots to use on their wedding invitations , to indulge and make memories whilst getting used to the presence of the photographer .

These shoots enable you to grow in confidence and get used to the camera. As a result, on the big day you will be more relaxed , used to the photographer’s presence and confident that you have chosen the right one! This is also an opportunity to take some time off from your wedding planning which is often stressful. This shoot will be a wonderful break, allowing you to refocus your preparations on your relationship and your shared happiness.

Santorini, a magical setting

The location is an important choice for your couple portraits . Choose somewhere that is important to you and has meaning for both of you, perhaps where you first met or where you got engaged . It could also be somewhere you have always dreamed of going, anything is possible. Travelling has never been so easy so take advantage of special offers and head off! I was thrilled that this lovely couple had chosen Santorini as the location for their engagement shoot and it was taken during a walk through the little village of Imerovigli . I chose this village as it’s less touristy than Fira et Oia which meant that the couple felt less conspicuous and could enjoy their time together. The three of us wandered through tiny deserted streets using the opportunity to capture special moments and glances whilst enjoying the sunshine, the sky and the iconic blue roofs. I took reportage-style photos to allow the models’ true personality to shine through, together with traditional photos, more staged but still very natural.

Bianca and Daniel both wore pastel-coloured clothing which was in perfect harmony with the white walls of the village, blue of the water and the traditional Greek roofs which in turn contrasted with the bright pink of the bougainvillea, and ensured that the photos really conveyed the special atmosphere of the Greek Islands that they had fallen in love with.
